Sign Open Letter on Student Finance Issues

Sussex Students’ Union have published an open letter regarding the recent student finance issues that have affected members of our Sussex community. Sussex Exec voted to endorse and circulate the letter last week in support of USSU and our affected members.

In early March, just under 900 students received ‘reminder letters’ from the University Finance Team regarding outstanding debts in their accounts. These students faced threats of suspension and potential removal from the UK. The treatment of these students throughout this issue has been a matter of significant concern.

The impacted students, particularly those from international and lower-income backgrounds, have faced significant challenges affecting their mental health, wellbeing, and education. As a community, we believe it is important to advocate for their rights and demand action from the University Executive Team.

The open letter outlines specific demands for immediate action, including public recognition of the impact on student wellbeing, opening a complaint window for affected students, and re-establishing communication with certain student groups facing economic crises in their home countries.

Additionally, the letter addresses longer-term objectives aimed at revising communication strategies, addressing disparities in treatment based on nationality, and improving the overall support and resources available to students.

We invite you to read the full letter and consider adding your signature to demonstrate your support for these important issues. Your participation can help amplify our collective voice and encourage positive change within our community.

Please note that the deadline for signatures is Friday, April 19th. You can access the letter and submit your signature through the provided form.

Thank you for your attention to this matter, and we appreciate your support in advocating for the rights and wellbeing of all members of our Sussex community.
